How fine is the line between religious fanatisism and extreme religious devotion?

My friend, would be considered a religious fanatic by some, by others he is considered "extremely devotional". He doesn't push his view onto others, so I don't consider him a fanatic like the Puritans, Fred Phelps, or the Inquisitors. Is there a difference between the two terms?
