Please explain "lol" I've seen an explanation as "laughing out loud" but often that doesn't seem to fit

Thanx for asking this; I thought I was the only one confused by this text jargon but I am an old fart. My Turkish friend's favourite phase at the mo is "I'm OK but I was crying on the inside.." Whatever !
